You will be picked up from your hotel in Rome (if it is centrally located) around 0600h (06:00am). Travelling by coach and accompanied by a multi-lingual guide you will drive north along the Tiber Valley, until you reach the small town of Orvieto.
The origins of this town date back to the first Etruscan settlements of the 9th Century BC. See the famous Gothic Cathedral which dates back to the 13th century, which has impressive rich interiors.
The tour continues through the green hillsides of Tuscany, which are covered with olive groves and vineyards. Tuscany is synonymous with some world-famous wines, most notably Chianti. Stop here and sample some local wine, with a lunch of typical Umbrian and Tuscan produce.
In the early afternoon, drive along Lake Trasimeno to reach Assisi. Take a guided walking tour of this beautiful town which visits the Church of St Claire built in Italian Gothic style, the birthplace and childhood home of St Francis of Assisi, the People’s Palace and the temple dedicated to Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom. Also visit St Francis’ Basilica, which has magnificent frescoes painted between the 12th and 14th centuries.
Travel to the town of Santa Maria degli Angeli at the foot of the hill of Assisi. The little town is named after its beautiful church. It was here that the young Francis of Assisi understood his vocation and renouncing the world, started the Franciscan movement.
